Scott’s contribution to Mumbai

Sir Gilbert Scott made a big contribution to Mumbai. He designed many of its most famous buildings, including Mumbai University and Rajabai Tower.

Although he never visited Mumbai, locals revere him. He is the most famous ‘western’ architect in Mumbai because of his Gothic style. This is plain to see with the Rajabai Clock Tower. This building is Scott’s most famous in Mumbai. It stands tall at a height of 250 feet, or 25 storeys, with its intricate features carved from Porbandar stone.

Celebrating Scott’s 200th birth anniversary

A month-long exhibition at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya’s Curators Gallery honoured Scott. The exhibition looked at Scott’s famous buildings in Mumbai with a segment on the man himself. Educational and fitting for a man of his stature, the exhibition was a resounding success for the Curators Gallery.

Scott designed Mumbai’s buildings from his London office. The article on DNA notes that he “was not as prolific in India as other architects like FW Stevens,” but he is undoubtedly the most famous. Sharada Dwivedi, a local city historian, adds that “Scott is the only globally recognised architect to produce structures in Mumbai.”
