Sir Gilbert Scott never visited Mumbai. But his buildings were raised there. He designed many of Mumbai’s most iconic landmarks, including the Rajabai Tower and Mumbai University. Scott’s contribution to Mumbai is greatly appreciated by the Indian government and locals. To show this, in 2011 Mumbai held a Gilbert Scott and Gothic Revival seminar as part of celebration to commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of Scott.

Honoured to have Scott’s buildings

The Gilbert Scott and Gothic Revival seminar was part of a one-month celebration to commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of Scott.

Scott was the only world-famous architect who produced structures in Mumbai, as Sharada Dwivedi, a local city-based historian, notes: "Scott is the only globally recognised architect to produce structures in Mumbai. The other architects, who created great buildings came to India as engineers or as consulting architects to the government.""

Mumbai is honoured to have buildings designed by Scott," said Adi Jehangir, chairman of the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. Several other local historians and architects made a tribute to Sir Gilbert Scott, which is testament to his contribution to architecture in Mumbai and his name which is famous across India.
