The Hereford Screen

The Hereford Screen was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It was unveiled at the Great Exhibition in 1862 and was hailed at the time as the ‘grandest and most triumphant achievement of modern architectural art’.

The screen was constructed by Skidmore & Co of Coventry in wrought and cast iron and decorated with brass, copper, mosaics, and semi-precious stones.

The screen was removed from the cathedral in 1967 and installed in the Victoria & Albert museum where it remains.
