New UK passport design – in pictures

In 2015, a new British passport design was announced. The article “New UK passport design - in pictures,” published on The Guardian, is a descriptive photo gallery showing every internal page of that passport in correct printable order.

The article was published an hour after The Passport Office unveiled the design. The latest iteration of the passport was called ‘Creative United Kingdom’.

Two Scott architects make the cut  

The 2015 British passport was named ‘Creative United Kingdom’ for good reason - it celebrated the icons of British arts and culture. Only the most iconic people were included, including two women, one of whom was Elisabeth Whitworth Scott.

Elisabeth’s passport page featured an image of her, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Bournemouth Pier Theatre and a map of Bournemouth.

Architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott was also included. His passport page featured Liverpool Cathedral, Battersea Power Station and the K2 telephone box.

Other icons of British arts and culture

Other iconic people who made the final cut for the passport were William Shakespeare who appears as a watermark on every page, John Harrison, the artist John Constable, and mathematicians Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace.

Iconic landmarks, events and inventions that made the final cut for the passport included the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Titanic Belfast, Angel of the North, Stephenson’s Rocket and the London Underground. Work by the artist Anish Kapoor for the London Olympics was also commemorated with its own page.
