A Surrey Estate by the Designer of Britain’s Red Telephone Box

“A Surrey Estate by the Designer of Britain’s Red Telephone Box,” published on The Wall Street Journal, is a short article that looks at a private house listed for sale in Warren, England, that was designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.

Grey Wings

Known as ‘Grey Wings’, the property was listed by upmarket estate agent Savills for £2.15 million in 2016. It has since been sold to a private buyer. The property is one of the few private houses designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. It was built in 1913, before Scott’s famous design of the British red telephone box and Battersea Power Station. The previous owners of the house, Chris Forsyth and his wife, Sue, lived there for 7 years and spent £200,000 to £300,000 restoring it. As the article on The Wall Street Journal explains, they rebuilt two orangeries and restored the original lead roof. They also restored several outbuildings which had fallen into disrepair.

A beautiful home with trademark ‘Scott’ features

Grey Wings is a southwest facing property with beautiful architecture. It offers 4,300 square foot of living space, split across five bedrooms and three bathrooms. You can clearly see the design flair of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the building. The angular staircase, for instance, wraps round the inside of the building and is lit up with huge windows. The house is so special, that it’s listed as having special historical or architectural interest by the UK government agency Historic England. You can view the original article about Grey Wings on The Wall Street Journal
