St Peter's, St Peter's Road, Croydon

This was a Commissioner’s Church built between 1849-52, at a cost of £6,600. It had 293 pews and 493 free sittings. It is built in Middle pointed Decorative style from flint and Tonbridge stone with a tower and spire 146 feet high, which were not completed until 1859-64. It then burnt down so had to be rebuilt in 1865. Critics vary as to whether it is ‘dull though competent’ (Pevsner) or ‘ornate and pretty throughout’ (Betjeman).
