The chancel of St Mary's parish church was extended in 1832, the north aisle was added in 1856 and the spire in 1861. Sir George Gilbert Scott continued to reseat and repair the church between 1865-70. A south aisle and organ transept  were added in 1879.  The latter was the gift of Lord Sackville Cecil and designed by John Oldrid Scott.
