Cairo Cathedral was designed by Adrian Gilbert Scott. Work on the cathedral began in 1933 and it was consecrated in 1938. The cathedral was designed with the Egyptian climate in mind- solid thick walls pierced were pieced by only the tiniest of windows, and the chief exterior decoration was saved for the central west tower which, in many ways, resembled his brother’s tower at Cambridge University Library, a building which was nearing completion as work began at Cairo.

Scott’s cathedral was alas demolished in 1970 to make way for a bridge and a new cathedral was built on a different site in 1988.
